Pune is an upcoming megacity. If you drive around you will notice that there is a lot of construction going on. Construction workers in every part of the city build houses, shops and large offices in a very fast pace. Offices are used by the many corporate employees in various sectors. Pune has a large base of engineers and they work for companies like Cognizant, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Wipro, Tata and Capgemini to name a few. What happens when so many high paid associates live in a city? I notice a lot of ‘surrounding economies’, to cater the needs of those people. You will find hundreds of food stalls around the offices in Hinjewadi and other corporate areas. And there are many upmarket style restaurants near the offices. In the Hinjawadi area, but also further away in Baner, Aundh or Kalyani Nagar, you will find lots of flashy style restaurants. A very good example of that movement is the ‘Balewadi High Street’, an area in Baner with new & posh restaurants. It’s home of my favorite lunch spot (Terttulia Bistro) and packed with people almost every evening in the week. You will pay approximately 1.500-2.000 INR (21-27 euro) for a dinner for two, which is considered very expensive for Indian standards but affordable for the new elite. I like it there, although I also like the ‘Traditional India’.
